Often times designers start a project only have it put on hold. I recently had the opportunity to explore some logos and branding for Courtyard Bistro. The Bistro serves coffee and breakfast items by day, and cool drafts, craft cocktails, and small bites by night.
The project never went further than the initial logo exploration, but the images below show my process. I start by doing some research on current styles, trends, and the competitive landscape. Then I stare at a blank piece of paper. Eventually my brain starts to doodle. From there I move to the computer and start to play with typography and refine what I’m liking. I really enjoyed exploring dining themes, and unique ways to illustrate the Bistro’s variety of options and it’s evolution from day to night. Comment on your favorite or least favorite!
Grillin' this evening reminded me of an old illustration concept. It was never picked up by the client, but it could have been amazing. It even had a name, "Lil' Grill," who was to be the spokesperson for Towneplace Suites and Weber grills partnership. Aligning with Towneplace Suites’ playful brand and the laid back nature of the grilling, we thought he was a fun and clever way to engage with guests. We even pitched the idea of "GRILLmojis." Alas, Lil' Grill was liked, but not loved by Weber. Apparently personifying their iconic grill is frowned upon.
Futurebirds is one of my favorite bands. You should check them out! They are so awesome I was inspired to create some posters for a show. I tried to capture the the raw, soaring, atmospheric melodies and experiment with a mix of hand and digital illustration techniques.
